My Work Placement at Skillcrown: What I’ve learnt so far

By Harry Joseph, Construction Project Management Student

“I have been working for Skillcrown for 6 months now, which is somewhat staggering! I spent the first two months working as a part of the Quantity Surveying Team, which I really enjoyed. From carrying out take-offs to creating traffic management plans to sending off invitations to tender to subcontractors, I carried out a vast breadth of challenging and really interesting tasks. I have also learnt new and transferrable skills. For example; learning how to pay subcontractor invoices through excel spreadsheets, the process of which once grasped, I found rewarding. There are many different facets to QS about which I have learnt, expanding my repertoire, so this experience will no doubt benefit me when I return to university for my final year! Thank you to Richard & the surveying team.

During November I moved onto Skillcrown’s Cairo New Road site – the company’s flagship project, managed by Billy Kaye. There, I assisted all members of the site-management team in delivering this high-quality project, carrying out tasks for both the internal and external management teams. For example; carrying out pre-decorations and finals de-snags and issuing to sub-contractors, monitoring and regulating the site’s health and safety systems, carrying out scaffold snags and checks prior to the scaffold strikes, and checking & signing-off all builders, re-cleans and sparkle cleans. Life on-site is, of course, totally different to that within the office. It is (generally) more hectic & fast-paced and somewhat colder! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Cairo New Road. Being on-site, seeing construction with my own eyes was something that I found particularly beneficial as it allowed me to question things I didn’t know and so I was learning constantly. Billy always encouraged me to ask as many questions as possible so as to maximise my learning, so I did! Additionally, the stage at which I joined the site was serendipitous because there were a great number of different subcontractors on site, ranging from electricians, carpenters, and plumbers, all the way through to steel fixers, green-roofers and paving-slab subcontractors. This allowed me to see a variety of different forms and components of construction taking place, meaning I learnt more and more which was really positive. Thank you to Billy and the site-management team.

I am back in the office now with the Land & Planning Department, learning another discipline here at Skillcrown! Thus far, I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement-experience. Time has flown by and I look forward to my remaining 3 months with the company.”
