Building Lives launches another London Academy

Building Lives launches another London Academy – supporting 23 previously unemployed Sutton residents into paid apprenticeships

Wed 13 March saw the launch of the Building Lives Academy in Sutton – a collaboration of many partners including. Building Lives is a registered Social Enterprise and Community Interest Company that brings partners together to get local people into construction apprenticeships.

This latest triumphant partnership has helped build the lives of 23 previously unemployed local people by providing 12 weeks pre-apprentice training and supporting them into paid apprenticeships within the construction industry.

Before cutting the ribbon, the Mayor of Sutton shook hands with every apprentice and commended the Academy as being an excellent partnership that wasn’t just ‘ticking boxes’, but actually helping real people into sustainable construction careers.

Stories from apprentices showcased how Building Lives has helped turn their lives around. Kane, 20 one of the younger apprentices said ‘After leaving college, I considered myself to be an excellent candidate for work. I am reliable, hardworking, willing to learn, but after sending out 100s of CVs and being turned away after countless job interviews due to lack of work experience, I was beginning to lose hope. Building Lives is a life changer. Now I am getting real work experience, getting paid and gaining a qualification all in one go.’

Building Lives already has other Academies in Camden, Hackney and Southwark. Steve’s vision is for more Building Lives Academies to open over the coming months and years and Building Lives are currently in discussions with other social landlords and councils to make this happen.

And Michael Senior, Site Manager, Skill Crown Homes said ‘When I heard we were getting an apprentice, I didn’t think he would be as hardworking and enthusiastic as Billy! I’m really impressed with his commitment.’

Claire Williams, Building Lives Project Manager concluded the event by saying ‘Building Lives is breaking the mould of apprentices. We are showing that given the right training and support, apprentices can be a real asset to any construction company’.
